Hague Accreditation
In 2006, the U.S. State Department and the Council on Accreditation announced the formal process for adoption agencies to receive Hague Accreditation. This permits agencies to become accredited with respect to the 1993 Hague Convention on Protection of Children and Co-operation in Respect of Intercountry Adoption (the Convention), and the Inter-country Adoption Act of 2000 (IAA). This is designed to protect the rights and welfare of orphans, and their emigration to the United States. It is now possible for adoption agencies to begin the accreditation process. Hague Accreditation will be required for an agency to process adoptions from another country which has also joined the Hague Convention.
